Here is an interesting tidbit about Wikipedia and the Law. A New Jersey court, in the matter of Palisades Collection v. Graubard just found that the court cannot take judicial notice of a Wikipedia article. The court cited the judicial principle that judicial notice must be based upon "sources whose accuracy cannot be reasonably questioned."
For litigators, this is less of an issue of what we know, then what we can prove in court. I may know that Chase just bought Wamu, but I better be able to prove it to the court's satisfaction that not only did Chase buy the bank, but it now owns all of the accounts, etc. As Litigators, in lieu of other evidence, we will often as the court to take "judicial notice," of its own records or a certified copy of a deed to prove certain facts in court, or that a property has been sold. It is merely another way for us to get information, that the court will deem reliable, into evidence. Well, I guess Wikipedia has a ways to go.
